Mitsubishi has unveiled the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV at the 2015 IAA in Frankfurt. The pre-facelift model was touted as the world's first plug-in hybrid 4WD SUV.

The exterior of the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has the same Dynamic Shield fascia seen on its petrol-powered twin brother. Flanking the grille LED headlights with LED DRLs housed within the assembly. The lower portion gets bumper extensions and circular fog lamps with chrome surrounds.

The sides have received chrome garnish on the lower portion and roof rails up top. Also seen are side mirrors with turn indicators and 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels. At the back, it gets LED taillamps, and a fair share of chrome embellishments. Mitubishi has introduced two new colors to palette, which include Ruby Black Pearl and Quartz Brown Metallic.

The interior looks premium and well-equipped. Over the older Mitsubishi Outlander, it features improved seat upholstery and materials, while a Luxurious Brown upholstery option has also been added. Accent stitching on the seats and door trim are also available.

The four-spoke steering wheel is wrapped in leather and has infotainment controls with silver accents. The instrument cluster hood gets accent stitching and the large center console features a piano black trim. Mitsubishi says that the engine, tire and wind noise have been substantially reduced owing to more than 30 developments.

Under the hood, the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV’s hybrid system consists of a Twin Motor 4WD drivetrain comprising of a 2.0-liter motor on the front and electric motor at the rear axles that draws power from the high-capacity battery situated under the floor. The company says that the reduction in engine friction has led to CO2 emissions coming down to 42 g/km from 44 g/km.
