Confirmed for a launch in 2016.

Based on the Audi Q1 test mules previously spotted, Italian publication Omniauto has come out with a rendering.

The Q1 takes on the family design, resembling that of its big brother - the Q7. The front gets the big six-slat chrome grille and sleek headlights that are expected to receive optional LED headlights with DRLs. Previously, the Audi Q1 was spied with the rear sporting a tailgate-mounted spoiler, wraparound tail lights and twin exhausts.

The Audi Q1, if it uses it, would be the smallest model on the MQB Platform.

Underpinning the Q1 reportedly will be the smallest configuration of VW’s scalable MQB architecture, with the length of the car not exceeding 4.2 meters. To make the SUV light, some body parts could be made from aluminium and composite materials. There are no details currently on the interior or features but Audi's Virtual Cockpit, MMI infotainment and Audi Drive Select could be in the contents.

For standard variants, power will be sent to the front wheels while higher variants will get the Quattro all-wheel drive system. The engine powering the Q1 will be a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder petrol from the VW Up!. More powerful gasoline engines could come in the form of a 1.4-liter TFSI and possibly a 1.8-liter TFSI unit. The diesel variants of the Q1 will rely on a 1.6-liter or 1.4-liter TDI four-cylinder unit. These will be mated to a 6-speed manual, 7-speed DSG AT or the 10-speed DSG gearbox that VW is currently developing.

Audi's MMI, Drive Select and Virtual Cockpit are very likely on the Q1.

A year after the launch, the performance-oriented SQ1 version might be in the offing with a 2.0-liter TFSI unit producing 221 bhp and married either to a 6-speed manual or S-tronic twin-clutch transmission with all-wheel drive, say reports.
