Expected to be revealed in Malaysia in H2 2015.

Courtesy of Paultan.org, the upcoming Peugeot 408 has been spotted testing in Malaysia, as revealed in new spyshots. Interestingly, the pre-production units were the RHD (right hand drive) versions of the Peugeot 408 sedan, which was first unveiled in China at the Beijing Auto Show in April 2014.

The new Peugeot 408 is based on the PSA's EMP2 platform, which also underpins the new 308.

The test mules appear to feature sparse camouflage, which confirm that it is indeed the Peugeot 408 on test. Judging by the spyshots, the Malaysian-spec models will get a new 5-spoke set of alloy rims, as opposed to the multi-spoke rims in the Chinese model. Otherwise, it looks identical to the Chinese model, right from the LED taillamps to the rectangular exhaust tips.

The 408 is based on the PSA's EMP2 platform, which also underpins the new 308. Under the hood, the Chinese-spec model packs a 1.6-liter engine that makes 117 hp, a turbocharged version of the same engine that makes 163 hp and a 1.8-liter making 140 hp. The only transmission option is a 6-speed automatic.

For the Indian market, Peugeot have periodically contemplated re-entering the country, and have even gone as far as breaking ground for a new factory, shortly after which they aborted operations. In the short term, PSA's Peugeot Motorcycles would be launching its scooter range in India, with the help of Mahindra (which has a 51% stake in the division).
