No automatic transmission, AWD or petrol engine for Maruti S-Cross – Report

Posted on: Jul 2, 2015 - 1:31am IST

Will be offered with 2 diesel engine options at launch.

When Maruti Suzuki unveiled the Indian-spec S-Cross to select media today, the technical specifications only listed two diesel engines and two manual transmissions. Apparently, there will neither be a petrol-powered variant nor an automatic transmission in the S-Cross when it is launched in the market in the weeks ahead.

Given the market preference for diesel-powered vehicles and long equipment lists, the S-Cross will continue to attract prospective buyers.

Despite the two being offered in the Euro-spec SX4 S-Cross, along with an optional AWD system, Maruti has decided to skip the said features, probably due to issues with pricing. Given the market preference for diesel-powered vehicles and long equipment lists, the S-Cross will attract prospective buyers regardless.

At the launch, the Maruti S-Cross will be powered by a choice of two engines: the 200 DDiS and 320 DDiS. The former packs the familiar 1.3-litre diesel engine delivering 89 bhp and 200 Nm of torque, sent through a 5-speed manual transmission. The S-Cross will be the first Maruti to sport the 320 DDiS 1.6-litre diesel engine with a VGT, which delivers 118 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. It is paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Both engines will power the front wheels of the car, with no option of an AllGrip AWD system from the Euro- and Chinese-spec model.
