The top-end variant of the 2016 Fortuner is expected to get 7 airbags, including a driver-knee airbag.

These spyshots further highlight the design details of the second generation Hilux-based SUV. The front gets Corolla-inspired LED positioning lights, a dual-slat chrome grille and inverted D-shaped chrome enclosures for the foglights.

Over to the sides, the 12-spoke 18-inch alloys lend the Fortuner a lot of character as do the new taillight clusters which appear to sport LED units. Towards the rear, Toyota has not gone overboard with the chrome, reserving it only to the registration plate enclosure, which also receives the 'Fortuner' branding.

The 2.7-liter petrol engine will be carried over from the previous generation Fortuner.

To recap, the 2016 Fortuner will be powered by the new 2.4- and 2.8-liter four-cylinder GD diesel engines paired to 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions. A 2.7-liter VVT-i petrol will also be offered, the engine being carried over from the first-gen Fortuner. The diesel engines are expected to be 10 percent more fuel efficient than the KD-series Fortuner powered by 2.5- and 3.0-liter engines.
