Transmission choices include an 8-speed tiptronic and a 7-speed S-Tronic.

Indian Autos Blog reader, Mr. Karun Mukhi, snapped the 2016 Audi A4 in Marine Drive, Mumbai recently. What is interesting is that the prototype is devoid of any camouflage, and the badging is also visible confirming it to be a TDI variant.

The new A4 is based on the MLB platform and is 120 kg lighter than its predecessor.

The lack of the 'Quattro' badge hints this to be a front-wheel drive model powered by a four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine, which could be paired to a 7-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission or an 8-speed tiptronic automatic gearbox. For the European market, Audi will also offer a 6-speed manual, a 3.0-liter V6 TDI, and four-cylinder TFSI engines, the latter expected in India as well.

With an evolutionary design, the new A4 is lighter by 120 kg, and is more aerodynamic with a Cd value of only 0.23, which Audi claims is a best-in-class figure. Overall fuel consumption has improved by 21 percent, and the most frugal variant of the sedan emits a mere 95 g/km of CO2 in the EU driving tests.

The new A4 is expected to launch in India early next year. While the A4 is assembled at Audi India's Aurangabad plant through CKD kits, the company's head, Mr. Joe King, stated in a recent media interview that Audi will soon announce "big ticket" investments in India, which could possibly increase the localization content.
