BMW is currently working on the next generation 5-Series lineup, which will bring a a host of new changes.

Based on latest spyshots, Top Speed has come up with a render that could be close to the real deal. The design borrows cues from the next generation 7-Series, due for an unveiling this year. It will feature a new front end that finally fuses its headlights with the kidney grille, a characteristic design element followed by the latest Bimmers, as well as new bumper designs, tail-lights and better on-road presence.

The new BMW 5-Series will sit on a newly developed RWD platform called the CLAR (Cluster Architecture) that was referred to previously as the “35up.” It combines materials like high-strength steel, aluminium and carbon fibre to help shed considerable weight from the current model.

The design will be an evolution of the current model, rather than a revolution.

Talking about the engine lineup and variants, the entry level 518d could be powered by a dialed-up 1.5-liter 3-cylinder diesel motor from the 2-Series Active Tourer, which is good for 116 PS and a staggering fuel economy of 26.31 km/l in the latter. Further up the diesel range, customers could have a choice between a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine in the 520d and 525d (power upped to 231 bhp), and a 3.0-liter inline six twin turbo in the 286 bhp 530d, 333 bhp 535d and a 400 bhp M550d xDrive.
