India-made 2015 Hyundai i20 launched with automatic gearbox - South Africa

Hyundai has launched the all-new i20 in South Africa, which is manufactured and exported from India. The new B-segment hatchback brings in the much needed design changes and feature upgrades required to make itself relevant in the highly competitive B-segment.

The wheelbase is now longer than the outgoing model by 45 mm (now 2570 mm), and the car is 24 mm wider (1734 mm) than before.

The latest i20 sits on a new platform that makes extensive use of high strength steel for its chassis. The wheelbase is now longer than the outgoing model by 45 mm (now 2,570 mm), and the car is 24 mm wider (now 1,734 mm) than before.

On the design front, it draws inspiration from Hyundai's Fluidic Sculpture 2.0, which gives the i20 a whole new look. Up front are a new set of headlamps that flanks a thin horizontal grille, right above the large hexagonal grille. A distinctive feature at the rear are the blacked-out C-pillars that gives the impression of a floating roofline. Also featured are new taillights that houses LED lighting in a "boomerang" arrangement.

Inside, the dashboard design has also been changed, where the center console is now slightly angled towards the driver. It features a new 3-spoke multifunctional steering wheel, gear lever, and an instrument cluster with a better multi-information display. Thanks to the increased dimensions, the interior cabin space is now better. Hyundai have also improved the quality of materials and plastics used to trim the cabin.

The i20 for South Africa will come with a petrol-only engine lineup, with 3 variants on offer: i20 1.2 Motion (manual); the i20 1.4 Fluid (manual); and the i20 Fluid equipped with an automatic gearbox. The engine in the Motion variant is a 1.2-liter VTVT petrol motor with 81.83 bhp and 114.7 Nm of torque, coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The Fluid variants pack a 1.4-liter petrol motor with 99 bhp and 136 Nm of torque, paired to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. The latter is unavailable in India.

The new i20 comes fitted with a 4-wheel electronic 4-channel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), as well as Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) as standard equipment. Braking subsystem comprises of a pair of ventilated disc brakes up front, and solid discs at the back.

Prices for the new i20 start at ZAR 184900 (INR 9.91 Lakhs) for the 1.2 Motion (manual), while the 1.4 Fluid variants start at ZAR 204900 (INR 10.98 Lakhs) and ZAR R214900 (INR 11.52 Lakhs) for the manual and automatic spec, respectively.
