Honda Cars India not working on a sub-1.5L diesel engine – Report

Over 100,000 Honda cars sold in India with the 1.5L i-DTEC engine. 

Honda is not working on a diesel engine smaller than the current 1.5-liter four-cylinder unit fitted on cars like the Amaze, City and Mobilio. The car maker, which launched this engine on the Amaze in India back in April 2013, has sold over 100,000 diesel-powered cars in India as of August 2014.

The diesel engine makes 100 PS and 200 Nm of torque, and comes only with a manual transmission in India.

Speaking to the Economic Times, President and CEO Hironori Kanayama, said that the company has no plans to develop an engine smaller than the 1.5-liter unit, as it doesn’t make sense.

The 1.5-liter i-DTEC diesel engine makes 100 PS and 200 Nm of torque, and is paired to a 5-speed manual on the Amaze and Mobilio and to a 6-speed manual on the City. The City is the most fuel efficient car in Honda’s Indian line-up with an ARAI rated efficiency of 26 km/l.

Developed exclusively for India, the 1.5-liter engine is based on Honda’s ‘Earth Dreams Technology’. It gets an all aluminum cylinder head joined to an open deck engine block.

When asked about the introduction of Civic and Accord in India, Kanayama said that the company will launch these models when the “time is right”.

    This means there are good chances of the Brio getting a detuned version of this 4 cylinder unit instead of having reduced it to a 3 cylinder engine.

    Makes sense. Honda should now concentrate on bigger, more power & refined diesel engine for its luxury & SUV segment.
