Audi's R&D chief, Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, has reconfirmed that the company will put the Audi Q8 SUV into production. The Q8, will rival sporty crossovers like the BMW X6 and the Range Rover Sport when launched.

We remind readers that Dr. Hackenberg confirmed the Audi Q8 as a vehicle having "a unique identity" to IndianAutosBlog.com in Switzerland at the VW Group Night on the eve of the Geneva Motor Show in March this year.

The Prologue Concept is bound to influence the design of future Audis like the Q8.

Speaking about the car, Dr. Hackenberg said that it will be more coupe like, and sportier looking than the new Q7, which debuts at the Detroit Motor Show early next January. Certain design elements for the Q8 could be borrowed from the Prologue Concept, which is on display at the LA Auto Show.

The Q8, the publication reports, is going through a development program at the moment and its market launch is expected to take place within three years.

The Q8 will have a sporty design, much like the TT Offroad concept's coupe-like roof.

The Q8 is defined as the SUV equivalent of Audi's flagship luxury saloon, the A8. Hence, it is expected to get touches like the individual rear seats, the yacht-like center console finished in customizable wood veneer and so on.

The car will be based on the second generation MLB platform, and will be powered by V6 and V8 petrol and diesel engines. Audi's 4.0-liter TFSI V8 could also be seen in a performance oriented RS Q8, the publication says.
