The Abarth 500 is available with two transmission options.
Showcased at the Auto Expo this year, the Abarth 500 will finally have its market launch in India next month. Abarth, founded in 1949, is Fiat’s performance tuning arm which injects performance into cars like the 500 and Punto. In India, Fiat will debut the brand on the 500 before introducing it on the Punto, which is anticipated to happen next year.
Based on the standard 500 hardtop, the exterior sees sportier bumpers, larger alloy wheels, body decals and most importantly ‘Abarth’ badges in place of ‘Fiat’ badges. The inside of the car gets aluminium pedals, sporty seats and red contrast stitching and inserts on the dash.
Its 1.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged T-Jet engine makes 135 hp at 5,500 rpm with the 5-speed manual transmission and 140 hp at the same rpm with the Abarth Competizione gearbox, seen in this car, which is a 5-speed automated manual transmission. Irrespective of the gearbox, the engine make 206 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm.
The differences lie in the acceleration to 100 km/h: The manual transmission variant takes 7.9 seconds and the Competizione, despite its extra 5 hp, takes 8.1 seconds. The top-speed is standard at 205 km/h. Both models are likely to launch in India.
The feature list of the Abarth 500 would have 7 airbags, ABS, EBD, HBA, projector headlights, twin exhausts and a Hi-Fi music system.
Competitor: Mini Cooper
Expected Price: INR 22-24 lakhs, ex-Showroom
Launch date: November 2014
