The Mercedes AMG GT has been unveiled in Affalterbach ahead of its auto show debut in Paris next month, and European market launch early next year. The AMG GT succeeds the SLS AMG and is the second car to be fully developed by the German carmaker's performance division.

The new sportscar keeps the basic design traits of its predecessor like the long bonnet, very short rear overhang and muscular sheet metal design. Where the SLS AMG had a flat roof and gullwing doors, the AMG GT sports a swooping roofline with regular doors.

The grille and headlamp conform to the brand's latest design language while the rear gets sleek combination lights, dual exhaust and a carbon fibre accented diffuser.

The modern interior is inspired by aviation design, says Mercedes. The flat-bottomed three-spoke steering wheel, tablet sized COMAND infotainment screen, four central AC vents and a busy looking centre console with numerous dials and levers constitute the dashboard. Materials used are silver chrome, matte carbon fibre, high-gloss carbon fibre, black diamond and matte silver fibreglass.

Coming to the business end of the things, the new Merc from Affalterbach has in its long nose a new 4.0-litre V8 Biturbo petrol engine which is available in two states of tune - 462 PS (455.4 bhp) and 600 Nm of torque in the GT and 510 PS (502.8 bhp) and 650 Nm of torque in the GT S.

The engine, which has its turbocharger located between the cylinder banks, is mated to a AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission. The GT and GT S manage electronically limited top speeds of 304 km/h and 310 km/h respectively. Both variants provide selectable driving modes.
