Report - Current Mercedes C Class production to end soon in India; New model coming in early 2015

The new C Class is based on the MRA architecture. 

Mercedes-Benz India will introduce the next generation of its popular sedan, the C Class, early next year. Autocar Professional reports that production of the current generation C Class at the Chakan facility in Pune, Maharashtra, will soon come to an end. It is believed that the company is assembling the last batch of cars.

Mercedes officials told the publication that existing demand and foreseeable bookings over the oncoming festive season will be satisfied with the current stock of cars. However, the new generation C Class will enter production at the plant only in the early part of 2015.

Based on the new MRA platform with a rear wheel drive layout, the new generation C Class is often referred as the 'baby S Class' by the media, thanks to its design.

The new generation C Class has gone on sale in key markets already, and is made in Germany, USA, China and South Africa.

The current generation C Class is offered with a 1.8-liter petrol engine and a 2.2-liter diesel engine. The diesel engine will be carried over to the new C Class, though improvements will be seen in its efficiency and emission levels.

Competitors: Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Volvo S60

Expected Price: INR 30 - 35 lakhs, ex-Showroom

Launch date: Early 2015
