Report – Tata Motors plans to export Zest to Asian and African markets

The X1-based vehicles are likely to target first-time car buyers.

Tata Motors is mulling exports of the recently-launched Zest compact sedan to markets in Africa and Asia, John O’ Connor, Vehicle Line Director (Passenger Vehicles) of Tata Motors, told PTI. Mr. O’Connor however stated that the company’s present focus was on the domestic market.

The Zest was launched earlier this week with introductory prices starting at INR 4.64 lakhs for the base petrol model and INR 5.64 lakhs for the base diesel trim (prices are ex-Showroom, New Delhi). Available with a 1.2-liter turbocharged petrol engine or the Fiat-sourced 1.3-liter diesel engine, the Zest competes with the Dzire, Amaze and Xcent in India.

The petrol motor is matched to a 5-speed manual transmission, while the diesel has options of a 5-speed manual or an automated manual transmission. The base diesel variant is exclusively available in the lower state of power tune, producing 75 PS, whereas other trims make 90 PS.

All variants of the Zest come with alloy wheels. The top-end variants are equipped with dual airbags, ABS and EBD.

In African as well as Asian markets, the Zest would compete with the Honda Amaze (called Brio Amaze and Brio Sedan abroad) and Toyota Etios.
