Will reportedly get a 793 cc CRDI engine.

Our friends at CarDekho have published the first spyshots of the Maruti Celerio diesel in the top-end ZDi trim.

The Celerio diesel gets the ZDi badge at the customary location on the hatch.

The car is currently undergoing road tests and some part of the testing is apparently being finished in Japan. The 793 cc mill is Maruti's first in-house developed diesel engine and would become the smallest diesel engine to be used by a passenger car, under-displacing the Chevrolet Beat that uses a 936 cc three-cylinder engine.

The Celerio and the Ace-rivaling Maruti Y9T load carrier are learned to be the first beneficiaries. The engine is tuned to produce about 50 bhp of power on the Celerio.

The report further states that the car will come in three trim levels - LDi, VDi and ZDi - with the VDi getting optional ABS brakes. The launch of the car, CarDekho speculates, is three months away, putting it smack in the middle of the festival season.

There are no changes to the variant's appearance.

Maruti may give an optional AMT on the Celerio diesel in the future once the supply line is more capable. This would make the Celerio the cheapest diesel AT in India, undercutting the Tata Zest.
