Crossover-like driving experience in a hatchback footprint and budget.

Indian Autos Blog reader Shank, spotted the upcoming Mahindra S101 (codename) test in Chennai recently.

The new Mahindra is set to debut next year, and is would (almost certainly) become the company’s smallest car (the e2o comes under the Mahindra-Reva brand).

The S101 is based on an all-new monocoque platform.

Though overall dimensions of the S101 will be comparable to a hatchback’s, it will have a high seating position and ample visibility, in order to give the driver a feel of driving a crossover, say sources. Mahindra have also smartly designed the cabin of the S101 keeping utility at the forefront. For example, the gearlever of the car is mounted on the dashboard column to free up space.

At the heart of the S101 is an all-new monocoque platform developed from the ground up. While details about this platform remain unavailable, it will be the company’s second monocoque platform, the first being the XUV500. And powering the S101 will be new three-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, the former of which is reported to have been jointly developed with Ssangyong.

    Mahindra has horrid quality cars.

  2. Dr. Nayak says:

    Hi Guys and Gals,
It is OK to bash Mahindra on design and quality but their technology is not any different from others. They have to just refine certain aspects of mechanical and design qualifications. Also you are talking about big difference between price points; try to buy a SVV like 5oo in any other part of the world and you will quickly realize that you have to pay twice as much. It is all about the money. They can also gold plate the emblem like RR and have 12 air bags and it is not a technology difference but just big bucks that nobody is willing to pay in India!

  3. Joy says:

Worst cars with outdated technology. Whenever I see a Xylo/Quanto/Scorpio/Bolero, I feel pity for them. Ignorant people throwing lakhs of money on outdated cars. Better to buy a Ritz/i10 etc. and save few lakhs. 98% of the time, I don’t see even 2 passengers on a 7 seater.

    1. Nikhil says:

Totally agree to your comment. With city speeds we have the better cars to own as mentioned by you should have little more ground clearance, the they will be match winners.

  4. car enthusiast says:

never get carried for low quality scraps in name of being indian brand.

  5. car enthusiast says:

loooting india in name of bullshit crap cars way behind other foreign auto brands, wake up my brethrens.

  6. Dr. Nayak says:

Are they developing a rural taxi or an Ecosport type of vehicle? It is all about the style and quality Mahindra; nobody cares if you have few inches/liters more of trunk space! We don’t need another hatch back, and you already have one (Verito Vibe) that is not selling well.

  7. Roy says:

Mahindra, Don’t waste money and time producing these kind of crap vehicles, We Indians now have a lot of quality vehicles to choose from.

I remember seeing Mahindra advocating Modi to use Mahindra vehicles, before you preach, you put it is practice by forcing all senior managers in mahindra including Anand Mahindra to use Mahindra cars.
