The Discovery Sport has entered its final phase of testing and the Freelander 2 replacement will be ready for the market next year.

In April 2014, Land Rover entered into a global partnership with Virgin Galactic, a British commercial spaceship company. The partnership involves sharing of engineering and design expertise. It also extends to testing and development of new Land Rover vehicles and the Discovery Sport benefits from the association.

Land Rover says that 181 Discovery Sport prototypes were built, completing 11,000 tests, covering approximately 750,000 miles in some of the harshest and challenging climates and terrains.

The Land Rover Discovery Sport was previewed by the Discovery Vision Concept at the New York Auto Show this year. The SUV would have a 5+2 seating configuration and will be built at JLR's Halewood plant.

JLR has invested around 200 million euros (INR 1641.4 crores) in the plant and increased the workforce to accommodate the production of the new model.
