Report - Entry-level BMW X2 coupe-crossover showrooms-bound in 2017

BMW will tempt premium hot hatchback buyers with the BMW X2 coupe-crossover in 2017.

Auto Express reports that BMW, the master of inventing new segments, will bridge the gap between the X1 and X3 with a small sporty SUV, sharing the chassis of the next gen X1 which is due in 2016.

Likely to come with three- and five-door body styles, the X2 will sit on the BMW UKL 1 FWD architecture that birthed the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. The car will be offered with optional AWD (xDrive in BMW lingo).

The X4 would have the hallmarks of BMW's SAV designs such as the X4 and X6.

Styling of the BMW X2 would have the hallmarks of the BMW SAV models like the X4 and X6. The car will be getting "angular headlamps, sharp creases and a large double kidney grille" Auto Express highlights.

The turbocharged 1.5-liter petrol and diesel engines employed on the Mini would go on to the general X2 variants, and a hotter version, aiming for the Mercedes GLA 45 AMG, would be given a 300 bhp 2.0-liter four-cylinder.

A plug-in hybrid variant could also see introduction with the petrol engine driving its front wheels, and the electric motor turning its rear wheels.

Expected price (if launched in India) - INR 35 - 40 lakhs ex-showroom
