The testing of the next gen BMW X1 is already underway and here are the speculative renderings of the entry-level crossover created by Auto Bild.
While the current generation X1 which created the compact premium SUV category is based on the underpinnings of the previous generation 3 Series's rear wheel drive platform, the next gen model will sit on BMW's UKL modular front wheel drive platform which debuted in the new Mini.
The 2016 X1 will get sharper headlamp design, a revised kidney grille and a new front bumper. In profile, the crossover would remain more or less the same save for a mildly revised greenhouse and a possible fender vent that is seen in the latest Bimmers.
The rear fascia would get a steeply raked windshield, a new tailgate and larger sweptback combination lights with the signature 'L' shaped LED elements.
The UKL platform is said to make the new X1's length shorter by 100 mm. However, since it is front wheel driven, the engine will be mounted transversely compared to the current car's longitudinal layout, resulting in more real estate for the cabin. The absence of a transmission tunnel is not only expected to reduce weight but will also free up space for rear seat occupants.

The upcoming SUV would be powered by three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel motors with displacements ranging from 1.5-litres (three-cylinder) to 2.0-litres (four -cylinder). Transmission options would include 6-speed manual and 8-speed automatic units. All wheel drive variants will also be available.
The 2016 BMW X1 should reach Indian shores in 6-8 months from its global debut.
