Maruti will soon bring out their first ever self-developed diesel engine on two products namely the Y9T and the Celerio. The Y9T, which is an LCV, would be the first product to carry this engine and would launch early next year. The diesel Celerio on the other hand is expected to launch within this fiscal year itself (before April 2015).

The Celerio diesel will launch in this fiscal year.

The 800 cc diesel powered Celerio will have the smallest displacement diesel engine among passenger cars (currently the Beat diesel with its three-cylinder 936 cc engine ranks the smallest). The engine is expected to be a two-cylinder unit and is being developed at Maruti's Gurgaon plant. A source told the Economic Times newspaper that the engine would nearly achieve 30 km/l.

With an ARAI rated efficiency of 26 km/l, the new Honda City holds the title of India's most fuel efficient car, followed by the Honda Amaze which is good for 25.8 km/l. It is possible though for the Celerio diesel to outclass the City to become the most efficient car on Indian roads.

The Celerio is currently available only with a petrol engine which happens to be a 1.0-liter three-cylinder motor producing 68 PS and 90 Nm of torque. The hatchback is available with a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed automated manual transmission (AMT).
