Brazil – KTM to re-enter with CKD operations by late 2014

KTM exited the Brazilian market in 2012 when its partnership with local distributor Izzo Group ended. The Bajaj-owned Austrian two wheeler maker is now planning to re-enter Latin America’s largest two wheeler market with a new partner in the form of Dafra Motos. Dafra Motos also partners with BMW, Ducati and MV Agusta brands in Brazil.
Globo.com reports that KTM will bring 14 products in a phased manner. The KTM Super Duke 1290, 1190 Adventure, 1190 Adventure R, 50 SX and 65 SX are expected to be launched in December 2014 as CBUs. The KTM Duke 200 and 390 would be launched in the country in the first half of 2015, imported as CKD kits which will be assembled at Dafra’s plant in Manaus.
The Duke 200 and 390 are made only in India, so the CKD kits for Brazil would be shipped from Bajaj’s Chakan plant near Pune. Apart from the Dukes, Dafra is also looking to assemble endurance bikes (250 EXC-F, 300 EXC and 350 EXC-F) and the upcoming compact Supersport models (RC125, RC200 and RC390). The compact RC range would also have India as its primary production base. In addition to the aforementioned motorcycles, the Duke 125 and 690 are also on the cards.
KTM is expecting to sell 1,200 units of the big displacement and off-road motorcycles, and 1,800 units of the Duke and RC series in a year. Sales and service would be handled by dedicated sections of Dafra’s existing network.
