The next-generation Volvo XC90, set to hit the markets later in 2014, is continuing road tests, and was recently spotted in Copenhagen.
The heavily-camouflaged test mule shows the XC90 with a production body, which will become the first all-new model to be launched under the Volvo brand after Chinese manufacturer Geely bought the company.
The new Volvo will be based on the company’s new SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform, and will flaunt the new design language set forth by Thomas Ingenlath, Volvo’s design chief. Thanks to the SPA, the flagship SUV is set to lose close to 150 kg in weight.
The XC90 will not only mark the debut of the Volvo SPA, it will also be the first time a Volvo will be powered completely by in-house four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.
Reports so far suggest that on the top-spec XC90, the four-cylinder engine (with a help of a turbocharger) develops about 300 bhp. The drive is transmitted to all four wheels using a mechanical all-wheel drive system and an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Dimensionally, the new XC90 will be about 100 mm longer than its predecessor, while width and wheelbase will increase marginally. The SUV will get the interiors of the Volvo Concept Estate shown at the Geneva Motor Show this year, and a prominent 9.5-inch portrait format touch-screen sits on the dash.
