That the launch of the Tata Bolt is close is not news, but Tata Motors is currently testing its latest hatchback without any camouflaging whatsoever.

Readers of Auto Column have sent in images of a fully visible Tata Bolt running around the company’s facilities in Pune. Thanks to the considerable amount of changes Tata Motors has made to the Bolt, the hatchback looks nothing like the Vista that it is based on.

The Bolt made its global debut a few days before its unveiling at the Auto Expo 2014. The Bolt, along with the Tata Zest, will be Tata’s latest offerings, before a smaller hatchback – to compete with the likes of the Maruti Wagon R – is set to launch in 2015. The Tata Bolt will enter production in July is most likely set for a festival season launch, as reported earlier.

The hatchback gets Tata Motors’ new family of turbocharged petrol engine, the Revotron engine, along with a standard diesel engine. The 1.2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder Revotron motor will produce 85 PS @ 5,000 rpm and 140 Nm of torque between 1,750-3,000 rpm. The diesel will feature the familiar 1.3-liter Quadrajet motor outputting 75 PS and 190 Nm of torque.

An AMT for this diesel engine is confirmed for the Zest, and we believe that there would be no reason to reserve this disruptive feature for the sedan.

First really good facelift from Tata in a long time. I hope Tata keep this up in all their coming models/ facelifts.

While it does look good from the outside, the interiors is what blew me away. It’s the best I’ve seen in an Indian hatch/ entry level sedan in a very long time. It’s not just the eye catching design, layout and the quality of plastics, it’s so well put together and a treat to the eyes.

The Revotron engine with select drive modes and the AMT would be great value additions. Let’s see how this pans out. The Zest looks even better.

Looks very impressive out in the open; Mini Cooper like rear but SUV like stance as always. Eagerly waiting for a review, hope its positive.

I mean it looks good and it is a good effort. But TATA should have brought out a completely new car. The profile still looks like Vista. If Im in the market for a hot hatch, would I choose this over cars like Grand I10, Brio and Swift. I don`t think so.

      Hi

Considering the time Tata Motors took to develop the Bolt and especially the Zest, I would say that it is ferociously short period of time. – and it takes tremendous amounts of will to accomplish such tasks. You might want to have a look at the interiors of the Bolt and the Zest. They are truly commendable.

The cars you have mentioned in your post are being made by Global brands like Honda, Hyundai and Swift. These brands doesn’t make cars just for India, they make cars for several countries and shows a significant discrimination, in terms of quality of materials and features between the cars they sell in India and the cars they sell Globally.

Tata Motors is developing a new hatchback on it’s brand-new XO platform. Here is the report: http://indianautosblog.com/2014/04/tata-x0-platform-128573

CORRECTION – XO platform is not brand new, but TML has cars based on brand-new platforms in the pipeline.

The car is looking fantastic. With all the features they are providing, the looks , they just need to price it right and it can do what the indica did years ago! Really looking forward to this launch.
I hope this actually changes the way people believe in tata.
