The next generation Toyota Hilux was caught on test in Thailand and Australia recently. As readers may be aware, the Fortuner is the people-carrying SUV based on the Hilux's platform, and this platform sharing will continue on succession.

The new Hilux and Fortuner will be based on the TNGA. The front-end styling is a combination of cues from the new Corolla and the Land Cruiser.

Forming the base of the new Hilux, Fortuner and even Innova will be Toyota's all-new TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform. The TNGA, which will form basis for new Toyota cars as small as the Prius and as large as the Fortuner, is Toyota's attempt at creating a VW MQB rivaling platform. Cars based on the TNGA are expected to be lighter than their predecessors.

Cars like Fortuner and Innova are volume sellers for the Japanese carmaker in India. Recently, Toyota Kirloskar Motor's vice-chairman said that the company will focus only on larger and more expensive models such as the Corolla, Innova and Fortuner. Understandably, Toyota makes more profits on these cars than the Etios and Liva entry-level models.

The new Hilux and Fortuner are due for a launch late next year.

The new Fortuner will build on the merits of the current model, offering generous interior space, a new list of features and strong diesel engines. The new Hilux and Fortuner are expected to launch towards the later part of 2015. A reliable source told IAB last year that the new Fortuner and Innova will launch in India in 2016.
