Maruti's upcoming premium hatchback, codenamed YRA, will be the first product from the brand to make use of a turbocharged petrol engine, reports Financial Express. In a bid to downsize its engines for better fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions, parent Suzuki will introduce the YRA with a turbo-petrol engine claiming an efficiency greater than 20 km/l.
Engineers are targeting a power output of about 90 bhp from this 1.0-liter engine. Production of the YRA will commence in India in the second half of 2015, and Maruti's plants will be responsible for exporting the YRA to European markets apart from satisfying local demand.
Maruti would join the ranks of Fiat, VW, Ford and Tata, who already have (or have announced) turbocharged petrol engines in their lineup. The Linea T-Jet, Polo GT TSI, Vento TSI, EcoSport and the upcoming Tata Zest and Bolt are cars featuring this technology in the sub-10 lakh price range. Mahindra on their part are working on a new range of petrol engines which are reported to feature turbocharging technology as well.
Apart from the turbocharged petrol engine, Maruti is also developing its own diesel engine family. The first self-developed Maruti diesel engine will be used in a LCV codenamed Y9T.
