German carmaker, Volkswagen, is not satisfied with its current two-member SUV portfolio which includes the Tiguan and the Touareg. While the Tiguan is priced from EUR 24,725 (INR 21.1 lakhs), the Touareg costs upwards of EUR 50,000 (INR 42.76 lakhs).

VW is considering a crossover based on the Polo.

As a result, the brand is unable to reach the lower end of the segment where crossovers such as the Nissan Juke (priced from 15,400 euros) and Peugeot 2008 (priced from 14,700 euros) exist.

VW hopes this would change once the Taigun (based on the Up!) reaches production in 2016. According to German publication Auto Bild, VW is also considering a crossover based on the Polo. The Polo-based compact SUV, as these renderings suggest, sports design inferences from the Tiguan especially at the front.

A concept previewing this crossover is expected at the Geneva Motor Show this March.

The crossover will feature an all-wheel drive system as an optional extra, and the engines will be the same set of powerplants used in small- and medium-sized VWs. A three-cylinder, 1.0-liter TSI capable of 110 hp and a 1.4-liter diesel engines are in the reckoning. Transmission options would include 5- and 6-speed manual gearboxes while an automatic DSG would come as an option.

Auto Bild suggests that VW could preview this crossover, through a concept, at the Geneva Motor Show next month.
