The AMT gearbox on the Tata Zest diesel would eventually make its way to the petrol models and Tata’s whole portfolio.

A report on The Business Line quotes him in saying that the AMT gearbox is in tune with what the company has been hearing from its customers and that it is a feature they want.

The AMT was first announced during the unveiling of the Tata Zest prior to the Auto Expo 2014. At the Auto Expo, the company had showcased a cutaway version of the Tata Nano Twist featuring an F-Tronic five-speed AMT gearbox.

It maybe that there are two AMT gearboxes under consideration. The one on the Tata Nano Twist was supplied by Italian vendor Magneti Marelli. The attached press release said that the Tata Nano Twist features an electro-hydraulic mechanism which uses an electronic control unit and a hydraulic system to supervise clutch usage and gear shifting. Leverton in his interview that the AMT would be a single clutch with an hydraulic actuator.

Is it certain that Magneti Marelli is the designated supplier and not ZF-Sachs? The former is under contract with Maruti (an indication of Fiat picking up a controlling stake in Suzuki eventually?). In that case, Tata might find itself in an uncomfortable position, since it may end up with a crate full of 1st or 2nd gen hardware.

Automatic transmission / AMT is a highly anticipated feature in the Indian market due to worsening city traffic.

Tata Motors decision to introduce the AMT / AT across it’s portfolio (in due course) is highly commendable!!

Note: I said AT because Tata Motors previously displayed Aria AT.
