BMW often say that they are the pioneers in creating new segments. Two segments created by BMW which also attribute to impressive sales figures are that of the X6 (premium crossover-coupe segment) and the X1 (entry-level crossover).

Launched in 2009, the X1 is scheduled to get a successor next year. This rendering from Automobile Magazine suggests that the new model will retain the overall dimensions of the current X1, though the front fascia will be borrowed from larger SUVs such as the X3 and X5.

The current X1 is based on the previous generation 3 Series' (E90) rear-wheel drive platform. The new model however will have the option of using the new 3 Series' (F30) rear-wheel drive platform or the 2014 Mini's UKL front wheel drive platform.

The UKL platform has already spawned a BMW in the 2 Series Active Tourer. The Active Tourer, which measures 4.34 meters in length is not all that longer compared to the current X1 which measures 4.45 meters in length.

Power for the new 2016 X1 will come from three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The X1 for India is currently assembled out of CKD (Completely Knocked Down) kits at BMWs Chennai plant. Dow the road, we expect this arrangement to continue with the new model as well.
