Hyundai India will cause some disturbance in the sub-4 m sedan segment for the first time with their Grand i10 based sedan.
The company has confirmed that the sedan will be revealed on February 4, a day before the Auto Expo begins, and clarified to us that the event is not for its market launch.
The sedan will share the BA platform which is used by the Grand i10 hatchback. Indian Autos Blog was the first website to describe the looks, and weeks later publish first spyshots of the model road testing in India, sent in by our reader Dr. Thachil.
Spyshots have revealed that the sedan will look identical to the hatchback, up until the C-pillar. There on, the sedan gets a short and stubby boot.
Hyundai will offer this sedan with petrol and diesel engines. The petrol motor will be the familiar four-cylinder, 1.2-liter Dual VTVT engine which produces 83 PS and 11.6 kgm of torque in the Grand i10 hatch. The petrol engine will have choices between a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 4-speed automatic unit.
Powering the diesel variants of the sedan will be the three-cylinder 1.1-liter U2 engine, which arrived first on the Grand i10 hatch. Producing 71 PS and 16.3 kgm of torque, this engine is paired to a 5-speed manual transmission.
Additionally, Hyundai may choose to offer the more powerful version of the above engine. With an added cylinder, this engine displaces 1.4-liters in the i20, still valid for lower excise duty.
Hyundai’s offering will compete with the highly successful Honda Amaze and Maruti Swift Dzire. A recent report highlights that the sub-4m sedan segment grew by a substantial 27 percent since the launch of the Amaze in April last year. With upcoming launches from Hyundai and Tata, this segment is set to surge even further.
Will Hyundai recall the Accent brand for the compact sedan?
