Ahead of the launch of the 2014 Honda City on January 7, the company has released this TV commercial which highlights the engines of the new City rather than the car itself.

Honda is keen to promote the fuel efficiencies of the new City diesel and petrol CVT models, and for good reason. Boasting an ARAI-rated claim of 26 km/l, the new City diesel is India’s most fuel efficient car, bettering its smaller sibling, the Amaze, by 0.2 km/l.

Surprisingly though, the new City diesel is powered by the same engine as the Amaze, and produces the same power and torque outputs. However, the 1.5-liter i-DTEC diesel engine gets to channel its 100 PS and 200 Nm of torque through a 6-speed manual transmission, while the Amaze gets a 5-speed unit.

The diesel City’s fuel efficiency is the talk of the town.

Though the petrol variants of the new City are powered by the same 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine as the previous generation model, Honda has tuned this engine to produce 1 PS and 1 Nm more than the previous gen model (the new City petrol produces 119 PS and 145 Nm of torque).

While the manual transmission is a 5-speed unit, the automatic City has been given a CVT box. At a claimed 18 km/l, the City CVT is 0.2 km/l more efficient than the manual model (which is good for 17.8 km/l).

The variant-wise feature list of the City can be found here. The review of the City Diesel can be read here, while that of the petrol City is available here.
