We've received word from our friends in Indonesia that Honda Prospect Motor has commenced bookings for the Brio-based Honda LMPV (or Honda Brio MPV). To be unveiled at IIMS 2013 in mid-September, Honda's low cost family van which is a product of the Honda R&D Asia Pacific team in Thailand and P.T Honda R&D Indonesia, competes with the Toyota Avanza, Suzuki Ertiga and the Chevrolet Spin.

Honda dealers are accepting bookings for a fee of 5 million Indonesian Rupiah (29,600 rupees) without sharing the technical specifications and price. HPM officials have told the media recently to expect the starting price to be under 200 million rupiah (11.8 lakh rupees).

Honda Brio MPV India-bound
Sketches of the Brio LMPV were released last month ahead of the car's premiere at IIMS in September.

The specifications that Honda have confirmed thus far are the ground clearance (185mm, best in class) and the engine displacement (1,500cc, same motor as the Honda City). Production of the new MPV begins early next year in Honda's second factory in Karawang, West Java. To give customers an extra assurance on the safety credentials of the Brio MPV, Honda have enrolled the car in the ASEAN NCAP crash test program.

At a roundtable this year, senior Honda Cars India officials confirmed that a seven-seat MPV based on the Brio platform, with a diesel engine, will be sold to India by 2015, but stopped short of sharing any further details. It is understood that the MPV for India is the model debuting in Indonesia next month and is highly likely to make its first local public appearance at the 2014 Auto Expo next February.
