The 2014 VW Golf R, the fastest car in the Golf lineup has been revealed ahead of its public debut at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show next month.
Visually, the Golf R differentiates itself from the regular model by means of a new front bumper, rear diffuser, 18" alloy wheels, daytime running lights integrated into bi-xenon headlamp units, black brake calipers with R logo, quad exhaust pipes (a pair at either end) and smoked rear LED combination lights.
On the inside, the car gets sports seats upholstered by a combination of fabric and Alcantara. The instrument console is new with typical R touches like blue needles.
The new Golf R gets its power from a new EA888 2.0 litre TSI that is used in the Golf GTI albeit adapting a modified cylinder head, exhaust valves, valve seats and springs, pistons, injection valves and turbocharger to belt out an impressive 300PS and 380 Nm of torque. The engine is paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox, and a 6-speed DSG automatic is available as an option.
The engine is 18% more efficient than its predecessor with a claimed fuel economy of 39.8 mpg (14.02 kpl).
The car rides 20mm lower than the regular Golf and is 5mm lower than the Golf GTI. Adaptive Chassis Control is available as an option. Just like the GTI and GTD, the R offers progressive steering that has reduced the number of lock-to-lock turns at 2.1.
The 2014 VW Golf R is expected to go on sale shortly after its Frankfurt debut.
