We all know that Mahindra is cooking up a compact SUV that targets the Ford EcoSport. Codenamed Mahindra S101, the mini SUV has started making news lately.

The test mule, with decoy elements, doesn’t give away the design details of the car.

Mahindra had restricted itself from taking the SUV outside the premises of its R&D centre located in Chennai, but not anymore. The mini SUV has graduated to the testing phase and here is a set of spyshots from Tirupur, the textile capital of South India, sent in by Mr. Subramaniam to Motor Vikatan.

The test mule wears decoy body parts and is thickly camouflaged. If you remember, this is how Mahindra started testing the XUV500 and the Quanto in 2010. The production car would have the mule’s footprint but that’s about how much we can decipher from these shots.

The overall size is in the ballpark of the Ford EcoSport.

Just like the Ford EcoSport, the S101 will be a sub-four metre vehicle looking to cater to the SUV frenzy Indian customers. While the Quanto is more or less a makeshift arrangement, the S101 will be a car that is developed from the scratch to be an SUV for urban needs.

why mahindra waisting money to develop mini suv/hatchback/small car which has no seven seating capacity, no suv like road presence???? why ????When they have trump card in their hand; but they are not interested to upgrade that, u know what car is that Mahindra bolero. car is not so small like ecosports,s101, and also not bigger like…. scorpio, xuv 500. bolero needs a good outer body and a great milage engine (1.5ltr)diesel that serve the duty to quanto. currently bolero looks villagers car not the urban vehicle.

Bolero is one of the largest selling SUV in da country….so y would mahindra try to reposition it as an Urban car…trying to do that might loose them their current TG for that car thereby loosing out on sure shot business while betting on a segment that might turn out in their favor…so i think building a new car from scratch makes more sense…plus it can be global car that can be marketed around the world by mahindra and sangyong….

In my opinion, a little urbanization would prepare the company for the monsoon days ahead when it will be raining SUVs in India. With higher income in rural India now, better roads & more SUV options in near future who knows which way the tide can turn (ref: who moved my cheese).
