The Chinese media presents us with the sketches of the car that were leaked from the Chinese patent office. The mini SUV concept which broke cover at last year's Sao Paulo Motor Show received good response, thereby earning green light from the VW board for production.

The patent sketches reveal that the SUV has not undergone any sort of toning down operation and stays true to the concept. New LED daytime running light strips below the headlamps, turn indicators on ORVM and perforated roof are the only differences.

Based on the Up! platform, the Taigun measures 83mm wider and 8 mm taller than the hatchback. The wheelbase is extended by 50mm to 2,470mm and the driving position is higher.

The dimensions are compact but the overall styling renders a muscular and a balanced appearance to the mini SUV. The car is powered by a 1.0 litre petrol engine which is available in both turbocharged and normally aspirated guises.

With the length of 3.85m and compact engines, the VW Taigun complies with the Indian sub four metre rule. Moreover, being a compact SUV helps its case massively in India.

If VW decides to bring the Up! hatchback, Up! based sedan and the Taigun to India, the production cost can be kept very competitive. The Taigun could catapult VW India ahead.
