Toyota Corolla imageToyota Kirloskar Motor has quietly slipped in a new entry level variant on the Toyota Corolla Altis called the JS for both petrol and diesel models.

The new variant replaces the current entry level variant J and adds a few features to the equipment list. The move comes as D Segment sedan sales is witnessing a dry spell.

In the petrol version, the new JS variant has dual airbags, manual air conditioner, touchscreen display, USB connectivity and rear armrest which were missing on the previous base variant. The petrol JS variant is priced at Rs. 11.74 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi).

The diesel JS variant adds dual airbags, touchscreen and USB connectivity to the older J trim. The new entry level diesel variant retails at Rs. 13.16 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi).

The Corolla Altis which was once a clear segment leader is now forced to share the pie with many rivals like the Hyundai Elantra, Skoda Laura, VW Jetta, Chevrolet Cruze and the Renault Fluence. So the upgrade to the equipment list is necessary to stay afloat.

The Altis is powered either by a 1.8 litre VVT-i petrol engine that puts out 138 bhp or a rather underpowered 1.4 litre oil burner which makes do with just 88 bhp. Both the engines are mated to a 6-speed manual transmission in the base variants.
