News comes in from New Delhi that Swift Dzire sedan and Ertiga MPV have been awarded with the prestigious India Design Mark: Good Design Award.

Maruti Suzuki ErtigaSuzuki Swift Dzire

This design award is given to recognize product designers/products that enhance our day-to-day life. The jury consisted of India’s leading design experts and faculty members of various institutes that teach industrial design. The jury judged the product line up on parameters such as:

  • Simplicity of the design
  • Trustworthy products
  • Reliability
  • Offering a true value for money
  • And manufactured in a responsible manner

This is the second time Maruti Suzuki has cleaned the India Design Mark award ceremony. In 2012, the Swift and the Wagon R cleaned the table.

As you may have judged by now, the India Design Mark jury is not looking for the most flamboyant and imaginative design but one that offers the best trade-off between practicality and aesthetics.

While it can be argued that the Swift Dzire and the Ertiga are not really the best design on sale in the Indian market, they surely are not an eye sore. They indeed offer the best trade-off between practicality and aesthetics which a common man appreciates.

Innova, Boring Design ? Who ever Said that, must get its Facts Right ! Innova when launched, was an Innovator in the Indian Market ( True to its Name ). It Created the MPV Segment in India, like in Europe that Time. Mahindra, Nissan, Tata, Suzuki, GM All Followed Suit ! Yes, it has been here Long, but even with 2 Major Design Revisions, its still looks Modern enough to Definately Stand out against Tata, Mahindra.

ertiga pricing is high but a good design can be bit more stretched to have a better 3rd row legroom at this same cost !!

While design is a subjective matter, in my opinion the Ertiga is one of the best designed MUVs in the Indian market today. I’m kind of surprised by the last statement of the writer here expressing his dilemma about Ertiga’s design. What other MUVs do we have on offer here? Innova? Boring run-of-the-mill design. Xylo? It’s a joke, honestly. No offence to any of these owners, but Ertiga stands out in terms of design in this segment and this award has only validated those thoughts.

XUV 500 is better designed than Ertiga.

but XUV is not an MPV and have you gotten inside one its absolutely a design nightmare, absolutely no coherency in design, style and colours. Indian Manufacturers still have to go a long way if any-thing XUV is an improvement over crude Scorpio not much.

They say sooner or later your passion finds you. Sometime in late 2009, I started writing for IAB and ever since then it has been a roller coaster ride for me. An amazing experience that has taught me a lot, taken me to new places, driven some great cars and met some amazing people. When you don't find me on IAB (very rarely), you will find me either at a coffee shop or an eatery or at the nearest gadget store.Hope you enjoy IAB as much as we do!
