Honda will launch the Amaze in India this month with three powertrain configurations.

The Amaze heads into the entry-sedan segment dominated by the Swift Dzire and is the first launch after Honda announced its changed approach to deliver customer needs faster around the world last September.

These are the three powertrain configurations one can select the Honda Amaze with -

  1. 1,498cc Earth Dreams 16-valve i-DTEC engine with a 5-speed manual transmission that produces 100PS @ 3,600 RPM and 200Nm @ 1,750 RPM, with an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure of 25.8 kmpl.
  2. 1,198 cc 16-valve i-VTEC petrol with 5-speed manual transmission that produces 88PS @ 6,000 RPM and 109 Nm @ 4,500 RPM and an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency efficiency rating of 18 kmpl.
  3. 1,198 cc 16-valve i-VTEC petrol with a 5-speed automatic transmission that produces 88PS @ 6,000 RPM and 109 Nm @ 4,500 RPM and an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure of 15.5 kmpl.

The Amaze was developed at Honda's R&D facility in Thailand. India's perhaps the market it was always meant for, as its sub-4m length, which holds nil relevance in overseas markets, drops that big hint.

The reason for it being launched in India is as the sedan, as a body style, is viewed as a "big car" and as a status symbol. The sedan is also conceived as being safer and the first choice of upgrade for a hatchback owner.

A senior Honda powertrain engineer said the diesel engine was developed only to be paired with a manual transmission. It is unrealistic to expect a diesel AT from Honda in this segment for now.
