Just this morning, we were discussing the onslaught of compact coupes from Mercedes, Audi and BMW. Now, a history lesson released by BMW on the 02 Series leads us to the speculate that BMW is getting ready to launch to launch the 2 Series very soon.

The video talks about the 02 Series, a two door sedan introduced in 1966 that was lightweight, compact and very fast. The 02 Series was so successful in establishing the BMW brand that the product lineup was expanded into the 02 Series 1600 and 2002. The 2002 was replaced by the 3 Series in 1975 and they rest, as they say, is history.

There is a very good reason BMW needs to peek into its past right now. The Bavarian automaker is ready to launch (or re-launch) the 2 Series brand. After countless spyshots and hundreds of renderings, it is about time we get to see the real deal.

The BMW 2 Series, as the name suggests, will sit between the 1 and the 3 Series. The simplest way to look at the 2 Series is to see it as a 1 Series with a boot. If the spyshots are anything to go by, BMW has plans to launch it in both coupe and cabriolet bodystyles.

The obvious contenders to the 2 Series are Mercedes CLA and Audi A3 Sedan. While the Mercedes CLA has already made a public debut at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show, the Audi A3 will show its face at Auto Shanghai next month. The 2 Series is expected to debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in September which is a long way from now.

By releasing this video so early, I guess what BMW wants to say is – “Don’t put down your bookings for the CLA or the A3 sedan just yet. Wait and see what we have in-store for you in September”
