GM India to launch a base diesel variant of Chevrolet Sail U-VA this month

Let's face it. The Chevrolet Sail U-VA was not the fortune cookie that GM India hoped it would be.

Chevrolet Sail emerges through a cloud of smoke

The B-segment hatchback was launched in India and its mission was to snatch the supremacy from the segment kingpin, the Maruti Swift. The reality was something different. Though the Sail U-VA offers acres of space and comes with the Three year Chevrolet Promise plan, the Chinese-born hatchback could only manage 560 units in February against the Swift's 19,534!

Now that's a crushing defeat and GM India should be doing something about it. For a start, the company has quietly slashed the prices across all the variants. According to Chevrolet India's website, the entry level petrol model costs Rs. 4.19 lakhs but the introductory price last year was Rs. 4.44 lakhs. The entry level diesel LS variant was priced at Rs. 5.87 lakhs at the time of the launch but now it costs Rs. 5.73 lakhs (all the prices ex-showroom Delhi).

In order to make the Sail U-VA more accessible to those customers in the lower band of the B Segment, GM India has come up with a new entry-level variant of the diesel version.

The base Sail U-VA diesel would cost Rs. 5.29 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi) which undercuts Swift LDI's price of Rs. 5.58 lakhs. The entry level Sail U-VA would be having its equipment level at par with that of the base petrol variant which lacks an audio system, keyless entry, rear wiper and defogger, leather and chrome appointments, airbags, ABS and EBD.

The price of the new variant has already been updated in GM India's official website. Our sources say that GM India would launch this variant in 2-3 weeks.
