Launched in 2005, over 380,000 units of the Sport have been sold worldwide. The 2014 model is 8 percent more aerodynamic than the outgoing vehicle (Cd 0.34), and is 149mm shorter and 55mm lower than the regular Range Rover, with a 45kg weight drop model-for-model. It is 62 mm longer and has a wheelbase increased by 178mm.

The knee room is increased by 24mm, while occupants also benefit from the wider cabin.  New, neatly integrated third row, occasional 5+2 seating can be specified.  These powered seats leave a flat floor with no loss of boot space and are split 50/50.

The Sport was developed alongside the new Range Rover but is built using 75 percent unique parts.

Land Rover say that New York is the largest market for the Range Rover Sport and hence an unveiling here does some justice to the car.

On the exteriors, the Range Rover Sport blends some styling cues of the Evoque, the tail lights especially. This is the most dynamic car Land Rover have ever made as well.  Like the bigger Range Rover, the Sport uses an all new Aluminium construction for its body frame and that makes it lighter by 420 kg than its predecessor.

Engine options include two petrol and two diesels with future hybrid and 4 cylinder engines being considered as well.

A 5.0-liter supercharged V8 forms the top end model producing 510PS of power and capable of doing the 0-100km/h dash in sub 5 seconds. A 3.0-liter supercharged V6 with 340PS is the other petrol on offer.

The diesel range consists of the 3.0-liter SDV6 producing 292PS and the TDV6 with 258PS of power. Land Rover has said that the new Range Rover Sport will go on sale during the third quarter of this year in more than 169 markets worldwide with four equipment levels (S, SE, HSE and Autobiography), plus new 'Dynamic' versions of the HSE and Autobiography trim levels.
