BMW can be credited with the honor of making the first sporty SUV – the X5. Bavaria proved to the world that SUVs don’t have to be mud-slinging farmyard equipments. They can be powerful city slicksters that could perform well both on the road and off it as well.
Porsche took the idea one step further and introduced a luxury sporty SUV – the Cayenne – the first ever mid-size luxury crossover.
Land Rover soon saw the potential in the idea and beefed up its Range Rover model to introduce the Range Rover Sport.
The Range Rover recently entered its fourth generation so obviously the Sport variant also needs to be updated. But this time Land Rover wants to give the Range Rover Sport its own identity that is separate from the normal Range Rover.
The Range Rover Sport 2 will be heavily influenced by Land Rover’s latest success story – the Evoque. It will feature a large flat roof with a very slanted rear window. It will be around 4.78 m to 4.85 m long because Land Rover is planning an Evoque XL which will be 4.60 m long.
It will ditch the old ‘two chassis’ architecture in favor of Land Rover’s new lightweight aluminum platform. The updated platform has reduced the kerb weight by 150 kg. The new Sport will be offered in five and seven seats option. The engine options will be carried over from the regular Range Rover –
- A new V6 turbodiesel engine with 255 hp and and a peak torque of 624 Nm.
- V8 twin-turbo diesel with 335 hp and a peak torque of 699 Nm.
- 5.0-liter V8 petrol engine with 550 hp and 680 Nm of peak torque.
- A hybrid V6 diesel engine with 333 hp.
The cabin of the new Range Rover Sport will move upmarket and offer new features. We should expect a large display in the center stack, a digital instrument cluster and a Harmon/Kardon sound system.
The Range Rover Sport 2 should make its public debut in the first half of 2013 and will give stiff competition to the BMW X5M, Mercedes ML63 AMG and the Porsche Cayenne GTS.
