Mercedes once had an indomitable brand image in India but the supremacy has been snatched off after the advent of BMW and Audi in the recent years. And Mercedes' sales in 2012 stood behind both BMW and Audi.

While its main rivals fight with each other for the top spot, Mercedes is sitting back and plotting a comeback with an array of new products lined up. The first of the new products that will hit India would be the Mercedes GL Class SUV.

Mr. Eberhard Kern, Managing Director of Mercedes India told Indian Autos Blog that the GL Class would be launched in May. Initially the big SUV will be imported as CBU from Merc's Alabama plant in the U.S. and in mid-2013 assembly at the Chakan plant in Pune will begin.

Our friends at Motorbash.com managed to get their hands of these set of spyshots of the GL350 BlueTec diesel variant, taken by their reader Mr. Amir Malik. The car was mildly camouflaged but the AMG body kit is visible meaning that there's yet another top-down strategy planned by Mercedes.

The GL350 will employ a 3-litre diesel engine which pumps out 255 bhp of power and a hugely impressive 632 Nm of torque, mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission.
