Mahindra Quanto front quarterAccording to CarMag.co.za, Mahindra is making preparations to launch the Quanto in South Africa. The seven seat, condensed Xylo has clocked over 12,000 bookings in India since its launch at the start of last year's festival season.

Mahindra is the first mainstream manufacturer to launch a sub-4m utility vehicle and the absence of any competition had led to the Quanto's flying start.

Mahindra spent 100 crore rupees on the Ingenio platform to make the Quanto. The angle of the rear bench was contracted and two foldable jump seats were introduced at the rear.

The company had showcased a five seat edition with a 2.2L diesel engine at the Sao Paulo Motor Show last year. This version provides two rows of MPV comfort and the refinement of a four cylinder engine that corrects two biggest shortfalls of the India-spec Quanto. These are essentials if the Quanto has to compete with SUV offerings in international markets.

Mahindra added prominent wheel arches, a high-mounted stop lamp and roof rails to hide the loss of bulk at the rear. The features and interior are carried over from the Xylo. Senior company officials have confirmed that there are no plans to launch an automatic variant and a petrol option also seems like a long shot.
