After revealing the all new RaRange Rover Sportnge Rover in the most grandest manner possible in Morocco, Land Rover has started work on the sporty version of the Range Rover called the Range Rover Sport.

Land Rover is busy testing the new Range Rover Sport at the Nurburgring. The idea is to improve driver involvement by changing the steering feel and suspension tune. The Range Rover Sport is expected to weigh the same as its sister model Range Rover.

It will be based on an updated lightweight aluminum platform shared with the new Range Rover and Jaguar XJ. The updated platform has reduced the kerb weight by 150 kgs. The new Sport will be available with 5–seat as well as 7–seat options, making it quite a practical SUV.

At heart of the new Range Rover Sport will be three potent engine options –

  • A new V6 turbodiesel engine with 255 hp and and a peak torque of 624 Nm
  • V8 twin-turbo diesel with 335 hp and a peak torque of 699 Nm
  • 5.0-liter V8 petrol engine with 550 hp and 680 Nm of peak torque
  • A hybrid V6 diesel engine with 333 hp

A 8-Speed automatic transmission will do the duty of shifting cogs.

Styling wise, the new Range Rover Sport will feature more aggressive design lines, sharply angled roof, a different bumper, larger front air intakes and a big spoiler.

On the inside, it will have a much more premium appearance complete with carbon fiber themed dashboard. We should also expect a large display screen in the center stack, digital instrument cluster and a Harmon/Kardon sound system.

The new Range Rover Sport is ready to make its public debut in the first half of 2013. We could see some action from JLR at the Detroit Motor Show.

When launched, the Range Rover Sport will face some stiff competition from the BMW X5M, Mercedes ML63 AMG and the Porsche Cayenne GTS.
