Tata had been caught a number of times testing what is speculated to be an extended version of the Indica eV2.

Here are the latest spyshots of the test mule which was spotted by a regular contributor of Anythingonwheels.blogspot.in. The mule was heavily camouflaged from the B-pillar to the rear.

The rear is camouflaged to confuse the onlookers, who would have a hard time in concluding whether it's a hatchback or a mini MPV. Whatever it is, it suggests that Tata Motors is still clinging onto the 13 year old platform.

Have a look at our rendering of the Tata Indica XL

The front of the car looks exactly same as the Indica eV2 and the wheelbase is extended to create a sort of hatchback limousine. Trust the Tatas to come up with novel body styles, after all they are the ones who came up with the sub-four metre sedan.

From the previous spotting of the Indica XL test mule which carried the CR4 badge on the fender, it's clear that the limo hatch will be powered by the 1.4 litre CR4 common rail diesel engine which is good enough for 25 kmpl in the Indica eV2.

What remains to be seen is whether Tata will slip in an additional row of seats to make it an MPV or will offer a single rear row with acres of legroom. It's speculated that the Indica XL will have beige interiors and rear AC vents.

There is no concrete information about the Indica XL which is expected to specifically target the taxi market and our questions to Tata officials regarding this car met a dead end more than once.

If Tata decides to spring a surprise on us and adds three rows of seats, the Indica XL could become the world's first three row diesel hatchback.
