For the first time in history, the Mercedes S-Class will spawn no less than four different body styles: a short-wheelbase sedan, a long-wheelbase sedan, a coupe and a four-seat convertible.

In this story, we would like to focus on the coupe version of the Mercedes S-Class. Touted to be a successor to the Mercedes CL-Class, the coupe version of the Mercedes S-Class is codenamed as C217. Mercedes is still undecided whether it will be called the CL-Class or the S Class Coupe

It is a traditional two-door coupe with a highly raked roofline for people who prefer not to be chauffeur driven in their S-Class. We like the fact that Mercedes has not fallen for the ‘four door coupe’ trap like Aston Martin and Porsche.

It will be based on Mercedes' MRA architecture which has state-of-the-art four-link front axle. It will also be lighter and more rigid than its predecessor.

Unlike Audi and BMW, Mercedes is not looking to increase the carbon fibre content in the chassis. Mercedes wants to stick to the traditional steel, aluminum and magnesium. The chassis of the CL will feature Mercedes Magic Carpet Ride technology which will have an intelligent camera-based damper adjustment system.

On the inside, it will get a completely redesigned dashboard with two large format monitors, programmable instruments, extended voice and gesture control, heads-up display, knee airbags and belt-integrated airbags.

Under the bonnet, expect a 4.6 liter V8 with 435 hp for the standard version and a 6-liter V12 engine with 630 hp for the AMG version.
