Is this a make or break launch for GM India? We certainly think so.

GM may be giving a tough fight in the lower B Segment to Maruti and Hyundai with the Chevrolet Beat diesel, but one will have to wait till the D segment (in personal car category) to see another Chevrolet that is popular (Cruze).

In the B and C segments, GM India has had a stop-go journey. The launch of the U-VA, Aveo, SRV and Optra fizzled out with time, but the company hasn't given up its hopes.

We will see a renewed set of models in the form of the Sail twins to complete the unfinished task of its predecessors. According to our sources, the Sail hatch is as spacious as the i20, but will be price positioned very aggressively compared to the Swift. The three-year no service cost, no maintenance cost service advantage is a crowd-pulling purchase benefit for the Sail hatchback.

Despite its plain design and no-fuss interior, the Sail is China's second best selling car in 2012.

For the Indian market, the Chevrolet Sail hatch is powered by a 1.2-liter petrol engine that puts out 86PS @ 6,000 RPM and 113Nm @ 4,400 RPM. The Multijet-based diesel engine variant (fuel type preferred by 8/10 customers in this segment) displaces 1.3 liters and puts out 78PS @ 4,000 RPM and 205Nm @ 1,750 RPM.

The Sail hatch is 3.94m long, and has a boot capacity of 248 liters. Unlike the Beat, it is equipped with a hydraulic power steering unit. GM India has confirmed to Indian Autos Blog that it will launch the Sail hatchback in petrol and diesel variants in October.
