There was a time when the Swift was the be all and end all of hatchback market. If you wanted a hatch, all you had to do was walk into a Maruti-Suzuki dealership and select which color for the Swift you liked the most. Although, the Swift is still selling in good numbers, the circumstances have changed.

TNS Automotive, the largest syndicated automotive study in India, has just released the results of its Customer satisfaction survey after researching over 9300 new car buyers. According to the findings, the throne for the ‘Most Satisfying’ hatchback is now split between the Swift and the Polo.

This comprehensive study covers 56 models with customer evaluations taken in the key areas of sales satisfaction, product quality, vehicle performance and design, after sales service, brand image, and cost-of-ownership.

The study also revealed a few interesting aspects of the Indian Automotive scene:

  • Car owners in North India are relatively less satisfied compared to those in other parts of the country; after sales service being the key reason.
  • The customers in the relatively larger cities are more satisfied than those in the smaller cities.
  • The customer expectations even at the bottom end are rising. So Maruti Alto and Tata Nano better watch out.
  • Relatively higher priced cars are able to deliver better satisfaction
  • Overall the Indian car industry has not compromised customer satisfaction despite of the high growth
