After successfully developing the Smartech engine and putting it into the Beat, GM India has now turned its eyes to the diesel hatch back market. Their first contender for the market will be the Beat diesel.

Sources close to the development say that GM is now developing a diesel engine specifically for the Indian Market. It will be a 1 liter, 3-cylinder engine which will first be housed in the Beat. The 1.0-liter Beat diesel is expected to hit the market by June 2011.

This diesel mill might also be used in the new Sonic hatch. Probably a higher capacity engine of the same technology will also find its way in the Sonic Sedan. Karl Slym, President and Managing Director of General Motors India, confirmed the development and also said that in the next 2 years GM will be launching 6 new products with 14 different fuel options.

Do you think the Beat Diesel will capture the fancy of the Indian buyer the same way the petrol one has?
