The CNG variants will enable Maruti to improve its market share which dipped below 50% in the first quarter of this year. Bigger metros in India have the necessary infrastructure to support CNG vehicles, and Maruti is counting on this strategy to get back on to the growth path.
CNG vehicles, apart from being cheaper to run, also have the property of polluting less.
This morning Nissan sent us a press release containing details of the Micra’s performance in India thus far. The company has managed to deliver 928 Micras to Indian customers since July 15.
Nissan adds that it has received over 3,000 bookings for the Micra in India from the time display Micras reached dealerships in the last week of May.
The Nissan Micra has been introduced only with a petrol engine and has recorded respectable numbers in its short stint in India. Nissan has to think about bringing in the diesel motor as well as the automatic transmission model to get a head start. General Motors is readying the Beat diesel and Maruti Suzuki is preparing the A-Star automatic. Both these models are in the Micra’s segment, so Nissan better work hard!
With development of the new Wagon R‘s LPG variant taking longer than expected, Maruti Suzuki has decided to re-introduce the LPG version of the older generation Wagon R till the time the new one’s good to take over. The demand for the Wagon R LPG has been good forcing the company to bring back this variant from its grave.
Dubbed Wagon R Duo, the vehicle runs on both petrol and LPG and contributed to 20-22% of the Wagon R’s sales earlier. The Duo is priced at Rs 3.68 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)

We are now selling the ‘Duo’ and it will continue till the LPG variant of the new WagonR is ready. The work on new LPG is going on. The R&D team has just started the work and it is unlikely that the LPG variant will be ready in this fiscal.
The company, on the discontinuation of the Wagon R Duo earlier this year, remarked that the re-introduction of a LPG Wagon R would depend on market demand.
